POSITION SUMMARY:
Current Opening: Three full-time, day shift positions (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM).
Under the supervision and direction of a licensed nurse, the Nutrition Support Assistant assists in maintaining the flow of unit activity by performing routine non-nursing activities for Powell Valley Healthcare patients/residents. These activities will help promote comfort, functional ability and contribute to their overall well-being.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Make beds, stock rooms, distribute laundry and, take soiled linens to laundry.
- Light housekeeping of resident rooms.
- Cleaning of desk area, pantry, and report room as needed.
- Clean soiled linens and clean utility rooms.
- Take ice chest to Nutrition Services when due for cleaning.
- Assist in ADL prep, assist residents in clothing choice and lay out clothing for CNAs. Set up needed supplies such as washcloths, toothpaste and toothbrush, comb, hairbrush and razors.
- Insure clothing is clean, properly marked, and relabel if necessary.
- Deliver and collect food trays.
- Transport residents to appointments, meals, and other activities.
- Answer call-lights and obtain appropriate assistance.
- Assist residents and families with orientation to facility.
- Transport specimens to lab.
- Maintain cleanliness of wheelchairs and other patient care equipment.
- Offer and service snacks, nutritional supplements, and fluids.
- Open drink carton and food packets.
- Prepare food for individual to self–feed, e.g. butter bread, cut meat.
- Assist the individual to eat and/or drink as determined by a licensed nurse and/or registered dietician.
- Provide encouragement for individual at meal times.
- Record food and fluid intake.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Must have successfully completed a state approved training course for paid feeding assistants. Course must be at least eight hours in length.
- BLS for Healthcare Provider.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole number, common fractions, and decimals.
- Understand the basic metric system.
- Competency in basic computer skills and willingness to learn electronic applications.
- Work with confused or combative patients/residents.
- Read, write and comprehend simple instructions, memos, and correspondence.
- Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
- Speak and document clearly and concisely.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with members of the Health Care Team.
- Solve practical problems and work under the direction of the licensed nursing staff.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS:
- Occasionally lifting or moving objects weighing 10 to 50 pounds
- Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
- Reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing, stooping, bending, crouching, walking, standing, and working with equipment.
- Subject to inside and possibly outside weather conditions.
- The employee is also subject to exposure to blood and bodily fluids, proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, exposure to burns and radiant energy.
