POSITION SUMMARY:

Current Openings: One PRN position. Can be filled as a Medical Technologist or Medical Lab Technician.

The Medical Technologist obtains blood, urine, and other biological specimens and performs various chemical, microbiological, immunohematological, and bacteriological tests on these specimens to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Obtains, or aids in obtaining, specimens for laboratory analysis, including blood, urine, and other body fluids and tissues according to physicians’ orders and the established procedures of the laboratory.
  • Obtains blood specimens by capillary puncture, venipuncture, on patients of varying age ranges, including infant (birth to one year), Child (one to ten years, adolescent (ten to eighteen years), adult (eighteen to sixty five years), and geriatric (greater than sixty five years).
  • Evaluates the validity of test results through the use of quality control measures and knowledge of normal values and the relationships of test values.
  • Preforms various clerical duties required to collect and process specimens and assures that appropriate test results are communicated to the appropriate persons.
  • Uses and operates such equipment as blood drawing equipment, centrifuges, microscopes, cell counters, refractometers, automated chemistry and hematology analyzers, and drying ovens.
  • Performs Preventative maintenance on department equipment according to established schedules and manufacturers recommendations, and helps to maintain the laboratory equipment in good operating order.
  • Works various shifts, as assigned, and shares call with laboratory technologists to ensure coverage of the laboratory during hours that the laboratory is not routinely staffed.
  • Aids in evaluating new test methods and equipment and makes recommendations regarding implementations.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment by assessing and maintaining equipment, stock supplies, blood inventory and general appearance of the department.
  • Preforms routine and special blood collection techniques, including venipuncture, capillary puncture, and arterial puncture.
  • Assists in training and orientating new laboratory personnel.
  • Aids the Director of Laboratory Services in preparing various reports.
  • Performs daily charge reconciliation.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree as a Medical Technologist or equivalent.
  • Registration with the ACSP or equivalent organization as a Medical Technologist.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is helpful and preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Read and interpret a variety of policy and procedure manuals, requisitions, and test results written in English.
  • Write legibly in order to report test results and other information accurately and effectively.
  • Speak and write effectively in order to communicate quickly with co-workers in the hospital in a variety of situations.
  • Speak and communicate politely and maintain good customer (patient) relations.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Basic computer skill thru the capacity to learn and apply electronic applications.
  • Use the system of real number, to solve algebraic equations, and to use various statistical functions and equations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing, stooping, bending, crouching, walking, standing, and working with equipment.
  • Subject to inside and possibly outside weather conditions.
